why couldn't THIS have been the Godzilla remake?
This movie struck an odd awe in me the first time i saw the trailer months ago. and now that iv'e seen the monster i'm pissed that Abrams didn't get the job helming 98's Godzilla remake. i don't even remember who's in that movie besides Azaria, but i remember thinking that people just weren't concerned enough that a giant creature is attacking New York. Cloverfield would have been a great Godzilla remake told from the view of some camcorder but alas.. Now to the movie. What happened to The brothers girlfriend? she flew off in a chopper and nothing is explained. i wanted a little more news coverage from the worlds view of whats going on. Nobody even mentions terrorist attack which is unrealistic. i wanted the Army to explain where this thing came from and what it was doing here, i mean it was very realistic, but i think a POV from Los Angeles where some CNN expert is explaining that there may be more than one of these things cause they found the ship, or found the cave, ect. Why would that chopper pilot fly so close to this thing? and not veer off at an angle to increase distance. How did the monster just appear over HUD? wern't they just bombing it in the city? did they not see it right over there? those were some of my questions..and the reason i bet Abrams wanted this to be Godzilla is evident in the ending theme music. that's a Japanese Godzilla march ripoff if i ever heard one

Before the others set apon this like vultures to a fresh kill, first and formost, this is J.J. Abrams we're talking about. I havn't seen any of his shows and I know he loves to make people think about what's not being told and cliff hangers.

And as you said yourself, the film was made with a camcorder, with the only news footage being show from TV stations in and around New York City.
The military, atleast those who where present, had no idea what the hell was really going on, and even if they did, they wasn't going to tell some kids what was going on while the monster was attacking.

All we can do now is wait to see if there's a sequel or if they continue the viral marketing to give us some more info. Other then that, alot of the stuff you want to know is stuff that nobody here really knows about. All we can do is guess and hope.

I hope they continue something ... sequel or more viral stuff ... or preferably both.

I'm going to agree to disagree with you there Judgeraye. Wink Don't get me wrong, I like the Godzilla movies, they're classics. But when I first saw the teaser trailer, I was actually hoping that it wouldn't be a Godzilla remake [or sequel or whatever]. I guess there's just so much in that vein lately, that I'm always looking for something new and fresh. That's one of the things that I love about Cloverfield. Even though the giant monster idea isn't exactly new, the monster itself is. So for me, I was really glad to see an original concept.

Of course I will agree with you that there must have been some influence with Godzilla there.

egggsactly. would it have been too much trouble to have some army scientist or whoever explain this a little bit? Is everybody who makes a movie in Hollywood going to go sparse on the info so the audience is bewildered and then they can say "This aint your usual Hollywood drabble..." so they can feel superior to people who PAID to see the film!!?
No Country for Old Men, anyone?

yeah but they didn't HAVE to keep the style throughout, i get it, some soldier picked up a camera, lets take into account that the guy said "did you take my TAPE out" so it was a camera with a 14 hour battery life and 16 hour tape. (why couldn't he have looted a camera battery as well as some tapes?) then they cut to Army HQ with a regular camera. (a break would have been nice as i was nauseous the whole film) then he tells generals or the Prez or whoever what they've discovered so far. Could've ended it with the scientist saying..."We think it's looking for it's mother......"

Sure, I'll throw up a reply for those now. I guess I just jumped onto the subject of the topic. I tend to do that sometimes. Of course I'm one of the least informed in regards to Cloverfield on this board, as I was late on the scene. So my theories probably ... suck. XD

I think quite a few of us have been speculating that. You would assume that she did escape in the helicopter, but on the other hand as there is no way to know for sure if she did or not [i.e. once the chopper leaves, it is out of view of Hud's video camera]. As nothing was given in the follow up, we have to either speculate, wait for a sequel or see if they continue with the ARG.

The only mention of a terrorist attack I remember is some guy on the rooftop of Rob's apartment when the attack first happened. But as for the military, well they always keep things hush-hush. Even if they did know what it was [which I really highly doubt because it's something out of the ordinary], I really hightly doubt they would have been told. I got the impression that some of the military there were trying to hide something.

As for the news reports, I thought that strange two. I am almost certain that the theory [?] about two monsters is correct, but the news reports all seem to only mention one monster. I posted that somewhere else the other day.

All good points again, but unfortunately things that haven't been answered. The chopper could have easily went int the opposite direction for safety. The thing with Hud not seeing the monster, that was the only inconsistency I really picked at in the movie. Because they should have seen some towering beast in the distance if nothing else. Then he goes and picks up his video camera and it's like 'oh shit'. Although I think the two monsters theory would explain why it's there and not in the city itself.
